When it comes to healthcare equipment, it makes sense that those servicing it should be at the top of their game. Recently, following in the footsteps of New York and New Jersey, Connecticut took this credo to heart. Beginning January 1, 2016 all Central Service technicians will be required to be certified by law.
Public Act 15-11 will dictate that all Central Service technicians hired on or after January 1, 2016 will need to be certified. This certification prerequisite won't impact current CS technicians, who will be grandfathered in and will not require certification.
Continuing education for CS technicians
Going forward all CS technicians – both those who were hired on or after January 1, 2016, and those who were grandfathered in – will still have obligations. Under this new Act, all CS technicians will need to complete at least 10 continuing education credits annually.
This Act is the result of the determination of the International Association of Healthcare Central Service Material Management (IAHCSMM), among others. The need for this legislation aims to mitigate a growing problem within our healthcare facilities – improper surgical instrument reprocessing. Surgeons and surgical patients alike place tremendous trust in Central Service technicians, and mandatory certification moves to reinforce our country’s commitment to best practices within all aspects of healthcare.
Ensuring that CS technicians are certified and educated on industry updates will add a great deal more certainty for successful patient outcomes. The legislation in Connecticut, as well as New York and New Jersey, will only encourage more movement in this direction.
Our communities will no doubt benefit from a more orderly and supervised group of Central Service Technicians who reprocess surgical instrumentation. Surgeons will gain confidence that surgical equipment will be appropriately handled and adequate sterilized. Technicians will have greater access to education and information in order to maintain appropriate standards. Patients will have peace of mind knowing that instruments or equipment utilized in their care will be properly sterilized.
